Death Customs of Rural Ireland
Ireland is a country steeped in ancient traditions, and folklore. Some of their most unique, interesting, and often frightening customs have to do with how the Irish have treated their dead throughout history. In the book Death Customs in Rutral Ireland: Traditional Funerary Rites in the Irish Midlands, author Anne Ridge peels back the curtain of mystery and legend, and allows the reader a rare glimpse at the way the Irish have treated and cared for their dead. Before moving to Galway, Anne Ridge taught in the Midlands in the 1970s and 80s, where she earned a Masters Degree in Irish Studies. She is currently working at the Galway County Library System.
