Mid-century modern (known as MCM) refers to an American design movement in interior design, product design, graphics, architecture, and urban development. It reached its popularity spanning from 1945 to 1969 during the post-war period. Cara Greenberg used the term in her 1984 book Mid-Century Modern: Furniture of the 1950s. Now, it is considered an important design movement and distinct from other design eras. Overall, the MCM aesthetic is "modern" both in style and construction. It is characterized by straightforward, clean, simple lines. Generally, it does not include decorative embellishments. Scandinavian furniture still maintains this aesthetic to this day.
