As far as Spiritual beings go, if you throw out all the new age stuff, you are pretty well left with Angels, Saints, Demons and the Devil. The story behind the St. Michael's prayer is that in 1884 Pope Leo XIII was celebrating Mass when he was suddenly in a trancelike state. He heard two voices, that of Christ and that of Satan. Satan was boasting that he would be able to destroy the Catholic Church. Christ dared him to try. After he recovered Pope Leo immediately composed a prayer and instructed the church to sing it after every Mass. This St. Michael figure is a reminder that we live in an earthly realm with an unseen battle all around, but Archangels are fighting for us.
