Teaching Harry Potter
Take them to Hogwarts! My bibliophile mother read to me every night and passed on her love of reading. Reading, as it turned out was the only excuse that mattered. Tired and feeling lazy because you were up all night reading? That's fine dear. Forgot to wash up the dishes and vacuum because you just had to finish chapter 7? No problem. One of my favorite memories was laying down with my head in her lap as she read the Hobbit. I hope I have passed along this passion to my own children. Secondary students need to learn to use their imagination, to be prepared to passionately dialogue with their peers, even if its over Slytherin or Gryffindor. The authors advocate for teaching creative and critical thinking -there are more life skills to be taught than just standardized test taking.
